A very cold Monday evening saw Blue Square North side Blyth Spartans knocked out in the third round of the FA Cup. A good performance by Premiership side Blackburn Rovers saw them go through with a 1-0 victory. A free kick in the second half by Carlos Villanueva saw their efforts pay off after dominating much of the game.
1978 was the last time that the Spartans got this far in the FA Cup when they reached the fifth round, and they could have equalised with a superb volley by Andrew Wright went wide in the last few minutes of the game. A good overhead effort by Robbie Dale couldn't find the back of the net and sealed the game for Blackburn who will face Sunderland on Saturday 24th January.
